Bayonetta Wiki

The Deadly Sin ritual is a forbidden practice of the Umbra Witches that allows Infernal Demons to reach new heights of strength. Using their own heart and blood as an offering to anoint the chosen demon with the magic energies within, the witch performing the ritual can transform any summoned demon into a reflection of their true uninhibited strength with all new powers.

In Bayonetta 3, Bayonetta performs the Deadly Sin ritual when clashing with some of the largest forms of the Homunculi, powering them up drastically in order to best them. Like any other summoning ritual, it is accompanied by an Enochian chant.

Gameplay[]

Bayonetta performs the Deadly Sin ritual automatically at certain points in the game to empower her chosen demon to fight a boss Homunculi character. They are all controlled directly in the form of a specific mini game utilising their new powers,

Demons[]

Queen Butterfly, Lady of Onyx Brilliance[]

Madama Butterfly's true form, obtained by being anointed in the magic-rich heart's blood of Bayonetta through her use of the forbidden "Deadly Sin" ritual.

Growing to a size that pierces the clouds, she has become even more beautiful and even more brutal, leading all who gaze upon her to feel their sanity crumble as something akin to a yearning for death begins to grow within.

Chant

DO O IA BAYONETTA. CNILA D COMSELHA ODO ANANAEL. TURBS C BABLON ZONAC CIAOFI BALZARG. FAFEN NIIS.

Approx. Translation

"In the name of Bayonetta. Circle of blood, open the secret wisdom. Beauty of the wicked appareled terror steward, come forth!"

Gameplay

Queen Butterfly is summoned during Chapter 6 to fight against the Arch-Pyrocumulus. With the demon towering above the clouds and treating them like mere bubbles in a bath, players must deflect the Arch-Pyrocumulus' staff strikes and shoot streams or waves of bubbles in order to incapacitate the Homunculi and damage them. After Bayonetta successfully traps it within a ring of magic, Queen Butterfly flicks the Arch-Pyrocumulus into a far off mountain. Deflecting three of the staff attacks will earn a Bewitchment.

Queen Butterfly also makes a brief appearance during the battle with Singularity Chaos in Chapter 14, where she is called alongside Sin Gomorrah to charge a laser attack.

Sin Gomorrah, Font of Devastation[]

Gomorrah's completely uninhibited form, pushed to the limits of its power by Bayonetta during the "Deadly Sin" ritual.

This form resembles the legendary "Beast Tyrant", spoken of in forbidden tomes, a mountainous creature rumoured to live deep within the Johnson Forest of Inferno.

This Beast Tyrant was said to rule over all of the Gomorrah in Johnson Forest, and could make all of the demons in the forest bow by simply raising its head, but not even the residents of Inferno have managed to see it and live to tell the tale.

Chant

DO O IA BAYONETTA. CNILA D COMSELHA ODO ANANAEL. IPAMIS NONCP FAFEN NIIS. AVAVAGO TLIOB VRAN.

Approx. Translation

"In the name of Bayonetta. Circle of blood, open the secret wisdom. Follow to the end, come forth, thunderous elder creature!"

Gameplay

Sin Gomorrah is first summoned during Chapter 3 to fight against the Arch-Iridescent and later on against Singularity Chaos in Chapter 13. In both instances, the fights plays like a fighting game with the demon and the Homunculi facing each other on a 2D plane.

Pressing certain buttons will command Sin Gomorrah to perform different actions such as claw swipes, tail whips, a lunging bite, fire breath and adopt a defensive stance. The enemy can perform the same actions themselves. The mini game functions like a "rock, paper, scissors" system where particular actions will either win, draw, or lose against another.

The Phantom, Igniter of Creation[]

Phantasmaraneae's ultimate form, unleashed by Bayonetta's "Deadly Sin" ritual, now with an out of control internal reactor that continuously creates magma at a temperature of one trillion degrees.

The flames that cloak its body and the sheer heat from the magma are powerful enough to vaporize nearly anything in the vicinity.

In this state, Phantasmaraneae itself has no way to cool down, and must simply fight until time ruins out and it explodes into nothingness.

Chant

DO O IA BAYONETTA. CNILA D COMSELHA ODO ANANAEL. MALPRG ROR MICAOLI IALPON ILS. FAFEN NIIS.

Approx. Translation

"In the name of Bayonetta. Circle of blood, open the secret wisdom. Fire of the sun mightily burns thee! Come forth!"

Gameplay

The Phantom is summoned during Chapter 9 when fighting against the Stratocumulus boss. The fight requires the player to switch between controlling The Phantom and riding the summoned Malphas commanded by Bayonetta β3 depending on the boss' behaviour. Due to the nature of The Phantom's empowerment, the Verse is on a time limit of 300 seconds.

When controlling The Phantom, it has access to enhanced versions of Phantasmaraneae's normal moves when controlling it using Demon Slave and must work in tandem with Malphas in order to stagger the Stratocumulus. When the Homunculi is defeated, The Phantom unleashes all of its barely contained energy and destroys the enemy with an explosion big enough to be seen from space.

Baal Zebul, Siren of Creeping Plague[]

Baal's true form, revealed by Bayonetta's "Deadly Sin" ritual.

This form is only revealed to those she has formed an eternal pact with; in other words, an opponent who sees this form has come face to face with their imminent demise.

In this form, Baal adopts a truly regal and graceful air, singing with an emotional and beautiful voice that resounds through all of Inferno, bringing a dramatic death on part with an expertly performed aria.

In fact, her love of opera is such that she occasionally journeys into the human world disguised as an average toad, sneaking up to the rafters of theaters to watch.

Chant

DO O IA BAYONETTA. CNILA D COMSELHA ODO ANANAEL. FABOAN ZUMVI FAFEN NIIS. BLIOR HE PARADIZ.

Approx. Translation

"In the name of Bayonetta. Circle of blood, open the secret wisdom. Poison sea, follow, come forth, comfort song of virgins!"

Gameplay

Baal Zebul is summoned during the ending of Chapter 12, after Singularity has possessed Bayonetta β4 and taken control of her alongside Mictlantecuhtli. The Verse plays out much like a rhythm game, where players must hit the corresponding button to block incoming attacks at Baal Zebul from waves of Perlucidus in time with the song she is singing. Successfully repelling all incoming damage will earn players a Bewitchment.

Trivia[]

  • When playing with Naive Angel Mode, Bayonetta pulls out a tomato from her chest instead of her heart during the Deadly Sin ritual.
  • Each summoning using the Deadly Sin ritual features references to numerous other pieces of media and literature:
    • Queen Butterfly's fight against Arch-Pyrocumulus that ends with the Homunculi being buried under a mountain (and its visual likeness to an ape) is a reference to Journey to the West, a novel published in the 16th century and one of Classic Chinese Novels. In it, the monkey king Sun Wukong is trapped under a mountain by the Buddha after trying to rebel against Heaven.
      • Queen Butterfly's second appearance also references the Kamehameha attack from the Dragon Ball series as her posing and vocalisations before she fires her energy attack are nearly identical.
    • Sin Gomorrah's fights are references to the Godzilla franchise and the genre of kaiju as a whole. Along with being featured in towering monster fights high above entire cities, the demon's name is also mostly like a reference to Shin Godzilla, a 2016 film by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi that acts as a reboot of the franchise.
    • Baal Zebul's highly technical opera singing and overall composition of the soundtrack appear to be a reference to 'Diva Dance', a song featured in the 1997 film The Fifth Element.
