Cheshire is a ragdoll shaped like a cat that was owned by Cereza and her alternate self as a child. It first appears in Bayonetta and makes frequent appearances in the Bayonetta series.

History[]

When Cereza was a child, her mother, Rosa, crafted a stuffed cat from rags and felt. After Rosa's affair with Balder was discovered by the Umbra Witches and incarcerated, the doll served as Cereza's only companion during the nights when she was without her mother.

Trivia[]

  • The name "Cheshire" is most famously shared by the cat in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
    • "Cheshire" is also the same name Bayonetta uses to refer to Luka, stating, "I've often seen a girl without lipstick, but lipstick without a girl? Most curious, isn't it, Cheshire?". This is a reference to how Cheshire, in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, would disappear, leaving behind only his grin. "Well! I've often seen a cat without a grin," thought Alice, "but a grin without a cat! It's the most curious thing I ever saw in my life!"
      • The word "Curious," is often used by Alice when speaking to the Cheshire cat most famously stated, "Curiouser and Curiouser!"
  • When the player fails to save Cereza from Joy, instead of Bayonetta, Cheshire appears in the death screen.
  • Cheshire's blue and red button eyes could potentially be to be a reference to the Eyes of the World.
  • According to Hideki Kamiya, Cheshire was made for Cereza by her mother, Rosa. This was confirmed in Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon.
  • In Bayonetta 2, whenever Bayonetta is turned into a child by Resentment, Cheshire manifests with her in this form.
  • In Bayonetta 3, Viola's bound demon is Cheshire, who resembles and shares the name with Cereza's childhood doll. This is reinforced by the demon's ragdoll form that appears on Viola's weapon, Mab Dachi, when inactive.
    • Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon confirms that during Bayonetta's childhood, Cheshire became the vessel for the demon of the same name during Cereza's journey to Avalon Forest. However, it has yet to be revealed what became of the doll following this.
