Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon (ベヨネッタ オリジンズ: セレッサと迷子の悪魔) is an action-adventure video game developed by PlatinumGames and published by Nintendo, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. It is a spin-off entry in the Bayonetta series following Bayonetta 3, serving as a prequel to the series based on the third game's unlockable secret chapter. It was released on March 17, 2023.[1]

Unlike the other titles of the series, Bayonetta Origins is more of an action-adventure video game that is split between the two main protagonists: Cereza and Cheshire, a demon that has possessed her stuffed toy. Both characters are controlled simultaneously, with Cereza being controlled with the left Joy-Con while Cheshire is controlled with the right Joy-Con. The latter has two modes: Unleashed Mode and Hug Mode, The player is required to use both characters in conjunction to fight of enemies and solve puzzles in the following ways:

  • Cereza can use a special magic ability called Witch Pulse, which allows her to interact with the environment in many ways, ranging from creating makeshift bridges and growing herbs to much more stuff, such as helping to bloom plants from Inferno. In combat, Cereza can use a spell called Thorn Bind, in which she can summon red and black-colored magical, thorny vines to trap enemies for a short duration of time. However, Thorn Bind costs one of her magic guages and she must wait for them to refill to cast Thorn Bind again. The magic brace that was given by Morgana can also dispel illusions from the Faeries to reveal things she didn't see in the first place.
    • In later points of the game, Cereza can utilize her hair to use Restoration Magic, allowing her to repair broken platforms to their original state for a short time.
  • Cheshire acts as the offense by attacking with his razor-sharp claws and counter ranged attacks in Unleashed Mode. Although he cannot die in combat, he might run out of magic and revert to his plush form. Cereza must hug him in Hug Mode to replenish his magic.
    • After destroying the four elemental cores hidden in Avalon Forest, Cheshire can use various elemental abilities to great advantage. Wood Cheshire can extend his vine-like tongue to grapple hooks and flying enemies, Stone Cheshire can stomp on the ground creating a minor earthquake capable of stunning enemies, Water Cheshire can fire a powerful torrent of water from his mouth to put out fires, and Fire Cheshire can spit out fireballs that can even melt ice.
      • At some points near the climax of the game, Cheshire can become Unbound Cheshire, allowing him to perform any of the elemental attacks, albeit being stronger than ever.

Bayonetta Origins was first hinted at in Bayonetta 3 through the Old Picture Book. When the book is unlocked, players are taken into a playable teaser for the game, showing a Cereza variant exploring Avalon Forest and confronting mysterious faerie enemies. The costume that Cereza wears can also be unlocked for Bayonetta to wear in the full game.

The game itself was confirmed on December 8, 2022, during The Game Awards 2022.
